The EnergyXchange greenhouse facilities at the Yancey campus include four greenhouses 30 by 98 feet, and three cold frames 14 by 96 feet. By Spring of 2009, four more cold frames will be constructed. Our greenhouses support the production of native rhododendron and azalea plants, and include a year-round aquaponics demonstration. In our greenhouses we tackle the challenging task of growing native flowering shrubs of the Appalachians—beginning from seed. Our staff can explain the difficulties and rewards of this process and how it helps our region, both environmentally and economically. We are mostly a wholesale operation, but offer plants for retail sales as well.
The greenhouse facilities at the Avery County site became operational in July of 2003. This site boasts a fully automated production greenhouse that measures 66 by 96 feet. It has the space to house almost 18,000 plants in gallon size pots. Currently the Avery greenhouse provides a greenhouse business incubator service.
