Project Branch Out

Aquaponics Demonstration

The word aquaponics comes from a combination of aquaculture and hydroponics. Aquaponics systems circulate water from fish tanks into gravel filled grow beds and back. The relationship between the fish and the plants is symbiotic. Fish water fertilizes the plants, and the grow beds act as a biofilter where the water is cleaned and pumped back to the fish tanks. We grow Tilapia in the fish tanks, and salad greens and culinary herbs in the grow beds. Detailed information recorded during the first year of operation is offered upon request.

The EnergyXchange aquaponics greenhouse serves as a demonstration site for local farmers and nurserymen who may be considering a new crop.  Our system is intended to be replicated by local farmers and others interested in growing aquaponically. New crops from aquaponic facilities can increase the local economy and provide a source of healthy, local food.

We invite you to visit EnergyXchange and see all the great things happening at the old landfill.
