Residents Featured in Artsee Magazine

Artsee magazine reporter, Katie Bowler, and photographer, Donn Young, spent a beautiful spring day this past March learning about sustainable uses for landfill gases. Glass blower, Aaron Baigelman, was their guide; EnergyXchange, their yet-to-be explored territory.

One Man's Trash is Another Man's Renewable Energy Source

We follow the hilly, winding roads of the Black Mountains in western North Carolina, past the spruce trees and the Carolina hemlock, toward the EnergyXchange, an energy-harvesting campus that sits beside approximately seven acres of landfill."

"When I realized we were coming to the EnergyXchange, I recalled the years in which I practiced my own 'recycled' art, picking through garbage cans on curbs and 'dumpster-diving' so I could rescue broken objects and turn them into new ones. So I was immediately intrigued by the concept of using an entire community's waste to fuel the artistic energy of seven artists (there are usually six residents at the EnergyXchange–-but right now, two are sharing the space usually alloted to one)..."
