The
word aquaponics comes from a combination of aquaculture and hydroponics.
Aquaponics
systems recirculate nutrient rich water from fish tanks into gravel
filled grow beds. The relationship between the tanks and the beds
is symbiotic. Fish water fertilizes the plants and the growbeds
act as a biofilter where the water is cleaned and pumped back to
the fish tanks. We grow Tilapia in the fish tanks and lettuce, culinary
herbs, tomatoes, and peppers in the grow beds. Our system is modeled
after the S&S Aqua Farm design.
The purpose of the aquaponics greenhouse
at the EnergyXchange is to demonstrate alternative agriculture and
crops. As
with other projects at Project Branch Out, one of our main goals
is to demonstrate alternative crops to tobacco and Christmas trees
for local growers. Growers will be able to replicate the system
and receive assistance from Project Branch Out if they like. A small
greenhouse could help increase income for farm families or simply
provide healthy foods.
Aquaponics is an innovative system.
We see it as a great addition to our project. If you have any question
please feel free to contact us or come by for a visit.
