Eichelberger
David Eichelberger was born in Roanoke, Virginia, in the Blue
Ridge Mountains. He began to seriously investigate art while
in high school, focusing primarily on painting and ink drawing.
In college at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University,
David was introduced to functional ceramics. In-depth study,
drawing from a broad range of instructors and influences,
earned him a B.F.A. Degree in 2000. After graduation, David
studied at the Penland School of Craft in western North Carolina.
This period of his education helped solidify David’s
aesthetic interests, and eventually led him to move to Santa
Fe, New Mexico. David worked at Santa Fe Clay Company, in
the gallery and retail store as well as in the studio, teaching
classes. He was in New Mexico for over two years when he was
juried into his current position as a resident artist at The
EnergyXchange.
“Making pottery is my means to quietly infuse the mundane
with meaning. “One aspect central to the pottery that
I make is the use of clean lines in the profile of a form.
For me, a considered, delicately restrained change of direction
within a curve can possess confident visual focus while also
being comfortable and at ease. When the character of one section
of this line can embody the same feeling as the entire vessel,
a cohesive quality develops which reflects a distillation
of the traits I find beautiful in the world around me.”
Currently David is in the last year of his term at The EnergyXchange
and continues to make functional ceramic artwork full time.
